Andy Roby, Minister of Music

Dr. Andy Roby began his service as our Minister of Music in July 2001. Previously, he served as the head of the Department of Music at Union University, Jackson, TN. He has served churches in music ministry positions for the past 28 years. He gives leadership in the areas of music and worship. He also has taught at Shorter College, Rome, Georgia, where he was director of church music studies, and Asbury College, Wilmore, Kentucky. Andy served on staff with Tony Tench at Bethany Baptist Church in Louisville in previous years and is delighted to serve on the same team again!

He holds the Bachelor of Music degree in sacred music from Union University, Jackson, Tennessee; the Master of Church Music degree in voice and conducting from The  Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky; and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting and vocal pedagogy, also from Southern Seminary, where he studied voice with Jay Wilkey and Ron Turner, and conducting with Milburn Price and John Dickson.

In addition to his service at First Baptist Church, Andy is the coordinator and a co-director of the North Carolina Baptist Singers, a choral group of 120 voices and 40 instrumentalists, composed of church musicians from across the state. He coordinated the group's 2008 Brazil mission project. Andy also serves as professor for the core worship class for M.Div. students in the School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University.

Andy's wife, Mary, is the Dean of Libraries at Gardner-Webb University. Daughter Rachel, is a graduate of Shelby High School and Shorter College (Rome, GA), and makes her home in Raleigh, NC, with her husband, Daniel Nall. Son David is a music student at Samford University in Birmingham, AL.
