Lifting Up the Truth of God's Kingdom

Jesus said, "If I be lifted up, I will draw all people unto myself." (John 12:32)

Since 1847, the people of First Baptist Church have endeavored to lift up Jesus through worship, teaching, music, drama, fellowship, missions and ministry. We invite you to worship, study, and fellowship with us as we serve together to see God's Kingdom come "on earth as it is in heaven."

Worship & Bible Study

We gather weekly as the Body of Christ to worship. Join us in celebrating the love of God, responding to His Word, and renewing ourselves as His people at work in His world.

Through both traditional expressions as we gather in the beautiful Gothic sanctuary, and through contemporary creative expressions in the Dover Activities building, we unite our hearts in worshiping God.  Evening worship draws our people together again in our chapel.

In Sunday School and Church Growth studies, the people of First Baptist Church learn to apply God's Word to their daily lives and are equipped for service.

Fellowship

The Body of Christ is drawn together in His love. Opportunities for fellowship are plentiful at First Baptist Church.

There are the church-wide events: lake and park days on Summer Sunday evenings, block parties, & weekly Wednesday fellowship meals, among many others.

And there are numerous opportunities for fellowship within church groups: Sunday School parties, youth activities, children's and preschool events, senior adult gatherings and trips, to highlight just a few.

Missions & Ministry

The people of First Baptist Church are involved in missions and ministry in innumerable ways, in Shelby, Cleveland County, North Carolina, across North America, and in many parts of God's world.

In recent months and years, groups from First Baptist Church have reached out in the love of Jesus to people in our own community through missions projects sponsored by "Hands On Missions," as well as to people in other places (Charleston, SC; Philadelphia, PA; Toluca, Mexico; North Carolina mountains; Weimar, Germany; Atlanta, Georgia; and parts of Africa).

At left, members of First Baptist pack serve in the recent Habitat for Humanity blitz-build project (Fall 2005) and help pack shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan's Purse, sharing God's love in developing countries.

In addition to churchwide and youth mission projects, our children and adults learn about and participate in missions through WMU, Men's Ministries, GAs, RAs, and Mission Friends.

Through participation and financial contributions, First Baptist is a part of a global missions effort that begins here in Cleveland County and North Carolina, and extends throughout the world. We partner with:
  • Baptist believers in our area through the Greater Cleveland County Baptist Association.
  • The State Baptist Convention of North Carolina (including the NC State Missions Offering).
  • A worldwide fellowship of Baptist believers in the Baptist World Alliance.
  • North American and global outreach through our regular giving and through our Christmas Offering for Missions (featuring the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions and the CBF Global Mission Offering)  and our Easter Offering for Missions (featuring the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions, and the CBF Global Missions Offering).
